Rearing animals in the City

THE Environmental Sanitation Section of the Mayor and City Council has expressed great concern over the increase in the instance of rearing of birds and animals in the city of Georgetown.

Over the past months, the department has received several complaints of citizen’s rearing animals and birds in such a manner, that it is a nuisance to the immediate neighbours and in some instances to the community.
From reports and investigations, it was revealed that pens in which animals and birds are kept are not properly cleaned resulting in an offensive odor. Also, large quantities of both birds and animals are reared and the accommodation is inadequate. In some cases animals such as cows, goats and sheep are not properly tethered and left to roam the city’s streets and private dwellings, causing damage to private property. Some of the communities in which this particular nuisance exists are; Wort-man-ville, Albouystown, Sophia, Mc Doom, Agricola, South Ruimveldt and North Ruimveldt.
Owners of poultry and other animals should be aware that it is unlawful for any person owning or having control of any chickens, ducks, horses, cows, goats, pigs, or any other type of animal, livestock, or other fowl within the city to permit them to run at large or to be a menace or nuisance to that person’s neighbours or the public. Section 77 of the Public Heath Chapter 145 specifies that nuisance includes:
(a) Any animal so kept as to be a nuisance or injurious to health
(b) Any accumulation or deposit which is a nuisance or injurious to health.
The City Public Health will take the necessary steps to ensure nuisances emanating from this type of activity are abated speedily.
