GCA/QUEENSWAY CUP : Police ‘imprison’ Malteenoes : …TSC and ECC record victories

WITHOUT the services of Steven Jacobs, the Thomas Lands-based Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) found themselves in trouble and were imprisoned by Police Sports Club (PSC) yesterday, as action in the Georgetown Cricket Association-organised Queensway Cup Open limited overs competition got under way. Also recording victories were Everest Cricket Club (ECC) and Transport Sports Club (TSC), who defeated Muslim Youth Organisation (MYO) and University of Guyana (UG) respectively, but it was the upset that was recorded by PSC, that set tongues wagging at the end of yesterday’s action.
Winning the toss and opting to bat first at the MSC ground, PSC scored 219 all out off 43 overs, with Pernell London and Jason Reynolds leading the way with 44 each, a score that saw London hitting one four while Reynolds had six fours and one six in his innings.
Seon Daniels led the home team bowling with 3 for 31 and received worthy support from Dion Ferrier and Kellon Carmichael who took two wickets each for 29 and 38 runs respectively.
Despite some lusty hitting from Forde who led all scorers with his 68 (5×4, 5×6) and Daniels’ unbeaten 31 (4×6, 1×4) the home team crumbled for 179 in 34.3 overs, handing the lawmen the rights to execute their arrest warrant, with their 40-run defeat.
Some blamed Forde for the defeat, as the burly skipper struck two sixes in successive overs off Jason Heyliger (1-48), but succumbed to the same bowler shortly after, when he got a thick outside edge to backward point.
Following his demise, Daniels tried desperately to keep MSC in the hunt, by blasting two of his four sixes off Heyliger, but it was all in vain as Troy Benn (3-35), Vishal Jaigobin (2-18), and Reynolds and Trevor Benn who both took 2 for 34, completed MSC”s humiliation.
At the DCC ground, TSC rode on the back of Carl Rambharose’s 84 (9×4, 4×6) to reach 204, with Oslyn Batson 19 (3×4) and Stephon Sampson 17 also with three fours, offering support.
Rambharose added 45 for the first wicket with Sampson and the same number of runs for the third wicket with Batson before both batsmen were dismissed by Wayne Osborne who took 3 for 41 to support Dennis Heywood’s 5 for 43 and Darnell Douglas’ 2 for 27.
When UG batted, they struggled against the left-arm spin of Kevin Ross who took 3 for 28, Batson’s 3 for 34 and Leon Peters’ 2 for 35 and were dismissed for 174 that was scored off 43.2 overs, of which Clevon Hyman 29 (3×4), Melroy Stephenson 25, Dwayne Dodson 24 (3×4) and Osborne 21 (3×4, 1×6) were the main contributors.
At the Everest ground on Camp Road, the home team destroyed MYO’s hopes of making it to the second round, by inflicting a nine-wicket victory on their guests.
Batting first, MYO scored 135 being bowled out off the first ball of the 40th over, with Chien Gittens 34 (5×4), Richard Latiff 24 (2×4, 1×6) and Rupesh Motilall 23 (2×6, 1×4) leading the way with the bat.
West Indies Under-19 leg-spinner Amir Khan took 3 for 21, Christopher Surat 2 for 14 and Chandrapaul Hemraj 2 for 35 for ECC, who replied with 136 for 1 from 23.1 overs, thanks to Rajendra Chandrika’s unbeaten 83 (9×4, 1×6) and Adrian Singh’s 46 (3×4, 1×6), the pair adding 129 for the first wicket.
The action continues today with Third Class taking on GNIC at MSC (Joseph Jeffrey and Zaheer Mohammed), Vikings and Guyana Defence Force (GDF) doing battle at GDF (Shannon Crawford and Edward Bowen) while Montgomery Chester and Matthew Kissoon will officiate in the contest between GYO and Ace Warriors that will be played at UG ground.
