THE Progressive Youth Organisation (PYO), yesterday, held a balloon raising ceremony at the Cheddi Jagan Research Centre(Red House)in Kingston, Georgetown,to celebrate the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) and its 20 years of governance in Guyana.
This is just one of the activities that have been planned to celebrate the anniversary of the PPP/C.
Assembled at the venue were members of the PYO, among them government ministers such as – Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment Robert Persaud, Minister of Agriculture Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, and Minister of Local Government Ganga Persaud, along with Prime Minister Samuel Hinds.
Prime Minister Hinds addressed the gathering with brief but yet meaningful remarks, in which he stated that the younger generation, would do well to learn from older members of society.
He noted that growth and development in Guyana is a challenge and the life we are living here in Guyana today is a reflection of how good the government and people are when it comes to production in Guyana.
He also spoke about the rights and entitlement of the Guyanese people and where Guyana has come over the past 20 years.
Hinds stated that a better life has been brought to all of Guyana since the time that the party came into power.
Media Coordinator of the Peoples Progressive Party and also a member of the committee that is being established to resuscitate the PYO throughout the country, Romel Roopnarine, in an invited comment with this publication, stated, that as a young man standing here in 2012, on this date, marking the 20th anniversary of the People’s Progressive Party being elected to government in 1992, the first thing that he could recall was in 1980, as a baby being born in a very poor society, where some seven houses with different families would be on a single plot of land.
He contrasted that to 2012, where even the average man is able to access a house lot, be it low income or not, from the government, and is able to access a loan with concessionary lending rate.
He noted, however, that this is not just a PPP/C event; this event is for all of Guyana as each and every Guyanese has benefited from 1992 to now, because of what occurred back then, when Dr Cheddi Jagan was elected as president.
