Guyana chess players battling in Umada Cup in Suriname

NATIONAL senior chess champion Taffin Khan, top senior Maria Thomas and top junior player Anthony Drayton are presently representing Guyana in the third annual Umada Cup Chess Tournament in Paramaribo, Suriname.

The Umada Cup tournament is organised under the auspices of President of the World Chess Federation (FIDE) Kirsan Ilyumzhinov in collaboration with the Confederacion de Ajedrez para America.
The tournament consists of nine rounds and runs from October 3 to 7. The event is divided into the Challenger, in which the Guyanese are competing and the Open categories.
Seventeen territories mainly from the Caribbean region are invited and over 50 chess players including two FIDE masters are participating. Jamaica, Trinidad, Guyana, Aruba and the host country are battling for top honours.
The tournament was held in Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados for the first two years.
