EVEN as Guyana’s national football team, the Golden Jaguars, prepare for their intense return matches against Costa Rica and Mexico, another football team from these shores are currently undergoing preparations to compete in an invitational tournament overseas.
The Guyana Beach Football Association (GBFA) team, the Red Jaguars, are currently preparing to compete in the third annual Bago Sports Beach Football Club (BSBFC) Championships which will be held at the Turtle Beach Heritage Park in Tobago, November 2 to 4.
At a simple presentation ceremony which was held at the Craig Street, Campbellville business location, Star Party Rentals (SPR) made a tangible donation to GBFA’s General Coordinator Rollins Tappin, who also acts in the capacity of manager of the Red Jaguars.
Speaking on behalf of SPR whose Chief Executive Officer Lennox Cush is a former national cricketer, Managing Director Trenton Griffith said his Company was pleased to be associated with the Red Jaguars, who he feels will make Guyana proud at the upcoming tournament.
“We at Star Party Rentals are always pleased to be associated with sports in Guyana and when the GBFA approached us through Tappin, we found it difficult to say no to him, especially knowing that the team has the calibre of players who can go out there and make the country proud.
“We know what the Golden Jaguars are presently going through in their bid to qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and in the not-too-distant future, this team can find themselves or even a few players competing on the world stage, as some of our players do compete with BSBFC in international tournaments,” stated Griffith.
In accepting SPR’s contribution, Tappin expressed his pleasure on behalf of the GBFA and at the same time called on other business entities in corporate Guyana to support the Red Jaguars who will play their first practice match Saturday afternoon against El Dorado Beach Football Club.
He told Chronicle Sport that the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport has also agreed to contribute towards the team’s participation in the tournament, by presenting five return tickets some time today, for which he is extremely happy.
“It’s gestures like these, what Star Party Rentals and the Ministry are doing, that make participation in tournaments and also the hosting of tournaments a success and today I wish to proudly thank both entities for coming on board with the GBFA, while I can proudly say that the Red Jaguars will go out there and make the country proud.
“The players have been undergoing intense training sessions for the past six weeks and I know that the guys are hungry for success, as they have disclosed this at several team meetings.
“Some of them are even eager to go on and make the country proud, with the aim of bringing the spectators back to the game, especially after the recent results being shown by the Golden Jaguars.”
Meanwhile, the GBFA has selected the team which will compete in the BSBFC Championships and will be led by Jermaine Grandison and coached by the man who guided them to victory in the final game of their three-match series against BSBFC last June, Abdulla Hamid.
The squad with standbys reads: Jermaine Grandison (captain), Travis Bess, Keon Sears, Michael Wilson, Ralph Alexander, Colric Beckles, Ron Fiedtkou, Marlon Benjamin, Colwyn David, John Waldron, Marmalique Davidson and Abdulla Hamid (coach), with the standbys being Jamaal Harvey, Andel Mendonza, Steve Brewley and Trevorn Archibald.
