TWENTY-THREE-YEAR-OLD Sam Lall, a fisherman, also known as Shamo or Alien, was yesterday pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital after he was found bleeding from a stab wound to his chest on the landing of his home at Section 8 Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara.
The police have since arrested his common law partner of six years, Hilda Beaton, 26, also known as Priya.
The incident occurred sometime between 05:00hrs and 06:00hrs yesterday.
Speaking to the media at the scene, a neighbour said that she was passing the house that morning when she saw Lall on the landing, bleeding and holding his side. And
Beaton was there, screaming and abusing him.
The neighbour said that she usually passes the house every morning on her way to work, and would often hear the couple quarelling.
Other neighbours say that the couple drank heavily.
One man who lives across the road from the couple, and who give his name as Ivan, said that he was called to scene by another resident. Ivan said that when he went over to the house he saw Lall sitting on the landing of the steps bleeding from his chest. According to him, he checked for a pulse but the beat seemed to be fading.
Ivan told the media that he then questioned Beaton, and she said that she had stabbed Lall.
Yesterday too, this publication spoke with Rita Pritilal. She is the mother of Hilda Beaton. Ms Pritilal said she would usually go over to her daughter’s house to check on the couple’s three children. She said that it was while preparing to make that routine visit yesterday morning that she received a call from Priya asking her to come quickly. Ms. Pritilal said that she lives three houses away from where the incident occurred.
The suspect’s mother said that she went over to her daughter’s house and found her sitting on the stair to the upper flat of the home. Ms Rita told the media that she then looked and saw her reputed son-in law sitting further up on the stairs and he appeared to be in pain. She said that when she went up to the man she found that he was bleeding from a wound to the chest.
Ms Rita said that after realizing that the man was stabbed, she hurried down the stair and called a taxi and rushed the injured man to the Georgetown Public Hospital. She said at the time the man was only clad in his brief and blood was running down his body.
She said that Lall would often normally beat her daughter and one time even stabbed her in the leg. The woman said that three weeks ago the man admitted that he “high fall her”.
Ms. Pritilal said that she would normally look after the children for the couple and they usually spend a few nights at her home. She said that on Monday night all the children slept home with their parents.
Meanwhile over at 257 Second Street Mon Repos, lives Jasmattie Lall, 47, the mother of Sam Lall, the now dead man.
She said that she and her son were over at her sister in Good Hope where they spent a few hours from Monday night into the wee hours of yesterday morning. The woman added that she her son, who returned from sea last week Monday, was scheduled to return to sea yesterday morning, along with her husband.
Ms Lall said that on hearing her son had been stabbed, she immediately called a taxi and headed over to where Sam and his reputed wife lived with their children. The woman explained that when she arrived at the scene no one was at the house so she headed over to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Over at the hospital the dead man’s mother explained that she sent one of her sons into the emergency operating theater to see what was her son’s condition was. She said that the brother came out and reported that Sam was lying on a stretcher.
The visibly shaken woman said that she then sent in another son who came back and told them that Sam was dead. Ms. Lall said that she then ventured into the operating where she saw her son’s lifeless body, and his reputed wife sitting beside it on a chair.
Ms. Jasmattie Lall said that her son had not been drinking and she is certain he was not responsible for the row that led to his death.
The woman disclosed that her son was often verbally and physically abused by Hilda Beaton.
Ms Lall told the media that the woman, who is now in police custody, will normally abuse her son when she is out of money to support her drinking habit. She explained that the woman would even show up at her home and verbally abuse her and her family.
She explained that sometime back, the woman showed up at her home and began abusing the entire family and even set her son’s clothing on fire. Ms. Lall said that when she attempted to go and report the matter to the police station, Hilda Beaton threatened to kill her and her son. She said that after being threatened by the woman she was scared to report the matter to the police.
The dead man’s mother said that because of the constant beating that her son endured from Beaton, he often sneaked out of the house to visit his relatives and friends.
