HEAD of the Presidential Secretariat (HPS), Dr. Luncheon has assured that getting the full fleet of Georgetown City Council’s garbage trucks back on the road will remain a priority for government.
He made this disclosure on behalf of Cabinet during his weekly post-Cabinet briefing at Office of the President yesterday.
He said Cabinet had taken note of the exercise that has been launched by the Implementation Committee working in conjunction with the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, the private sector and others to tackle the “distressing” garbage situation in the City.He disclosed that Cabinet had agreed that apart from the cooperation of citizens, the sustainability of the exercise depended to a large extent on the availability of resources at the level of the Council. But the Ministry of Local Government had revealed that a vast majority of the garbage trucks owned by the City Council were unserviceable.
He said the reasons for this large number of non-operational vehicles were currently the subject of a police investigation.
Government however has recognised that the need for deployment of these vehicles in their full numbers was critical to the effectiveness of the garbage collection campaign hence the position taken that police investigations notwithstanding, help for their rehabilitation and serviceability will remain a priority.
