Four fatal road accidents within three days

FOUR fatal accidents have been recorded from Saturday to Sunday last according to the Traffic department of the Guyana Police Force (GPF).
The driver of a car which struck down pedestrian, Colin Sears, 38, of North Sophia, Greater Georgetown, is in police custody assisting with investigations following the fatal accident at Coverden, East Bank Demerara.
The accident happened at about 02:30 hrs on Monday, August 27, 2012, when Sears was walking along the roadway, when it is alleged by the driver of motor car PLL 2675 that Colin Sears attempted to cross the road and was struck down by the motor car and then ran over by an oncoming motor lorry.
Colin Sears was pronounced dead on arrival at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre.
In another fatal accident which occurred at about 06:10 hrs on Monday, August 27, 2012, at Good Hope, East Coast Demerara, which resulted in the death of pedal cyclist, Harrichan Baliram, 67, of Foulis, East Coast Demerara.
Investigations have revealed that Harrichan Baliram was cycling along the roadway when he was allegedly struck down from behind by a motor vehicle which drove away from the scene.
Harrichan Baliram was taken to the GPHC where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police are also investigating the fatal accident that occurred at about 20:00 hrs on Sunday, August 26, 2012, at No. 10 Village, West Coast Berbice, where an unidentified man of East Indian descent was reportedly struck down by a motor vehicle which drove away.
The man was taken to the Fort Wellington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
He has since been identified as Ganesh Persaud, 45.
At about 22:15 hrs on Saturday, August 25, 2012, on the Bath Village Public Road, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara pedestrian, Benjamin, 44, of Supply, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara was killed in another fatal accident.
Investigations so far have revealed that the driver of motor lorry GJJ 7722 was allegedly proceeding along the roadway at a fast rate when he lost control of the vehicle and struck down the pedestrian after colliding with two parked motor cars.
Benjamin was taken to the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The driver of the motor lorry has been arrested and is in police custody assisting with the investigations.
Police Traffic Department statistics reveal that this year 59 road accidents were recorded with 62 deaths, including three children while for the corresponding period in 2011  there were 73 road accidents with 79 deaths in which eight were children.
