THE Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) Male Senior squad departed local shores, yesterday, for the Regional qualifier of the 2013 Rugby World Cup (RWC) Sevens Finals which is set to take place at Twin Elms Rugby Park in Ottawa, Canada, August 25-26.
Two teams from the tournament will emerge and qualify for the finals set to be held in Russia.
Guyana, the defending champion will join Trinidad & Tobago, Bahamas, Bermuda, Jamaica, Barbados, Cayman Islands, Mexico and St Vincent and the Grenadines in the fight to progress. They will be joined by rugby Powerhouses USA and Canada.
Yesterday, the pools for the Regional Qualifiers were released with USA, Jamaica and the St. Vincent and the Grenadines in Pool A; while Pool B consists of Canada, Mexico Bermuda and The Bahamas, and Pool C is comprised of Guyana, Cayman Islands and Trinidad and Tobago.
On day one of the tournament, the 11 teams play round robin pool matches with the top two teams from Pool A and the top three teams from Pools B and C moving into an eight team knockout tournament on day 2.
The bottom team in each pool will be playing in a separate round robin competition for the minor places. The two finalists on day two will go through to the finals in Moscow.
Simultaneously, the Women’s tournament will be taking place between Canada, Trinidad & Tobago, Cayman Islands, Mexico and Jamaica. Guyana was also scheduled to participate but unfortunately opted out because they could not gather all their resources.
