Secondary school student also fined $6,000 for marijuana

A SIXTEEN-YEAR-OLD student of Vryman’s Erven Secondary School was fined $6,000 yesterday, for being in possession of three and a half grammes of cannabis (marijuana). The defendant, accompanied by his mother, admitted to Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo, at the New Amsterdam court, also in Berbice,  that he committed the offence on June 29.
He was also ordered to do five days of community service .
Police said, during school hours, the defendant was seen acting suspiciously, by the headteacher, who summoned him to his office,
It was during a search carried out on his person that portions of the prohibited plant were discovered wrapped in silver paper in the boy’s right side pants pocket.
The police were summoned and the lad was arrested, the magistrate heard.
