BASSETERRE, St Kitts (CMC) – Defending champions Jamaica were struggling yet again but Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago grabbed precious first-innings points on the opening day of the second round of matches in the West Indies Cricket Board Under-15 Championship here yesterday. Playing at the Conaree Sports Complex, Jamaica finished the day 127 runs behind the Leewards after another poor batting performance.
Opting to bat first, the Leewards rattled up 165 for five with Tyrone Williams top-scoring with 74 and Ras Powell getting 39 and Phillo Wallace 38.
Williams and Wallace added 90 for the fourth wicket to bolster their side’s middle order.
Jamaica were then quickly bundled out for 77 despite Damali Taylor’s 38.
Mrinal Wadhwa claimed three for 25 and Zubie Deyal (2-5) and Karima Gore (2-6) picked two wickets apiece.
In their second turn at the crease, the Leewards cruised to 39 without loss.
At the Edgar Gilbert Complex in Molineux, Barbados grabbed the early initiative but Guyana hit back late to leave the game open heading into today’s final day.
Winning the toss and batting, Guyana made 124 for nine with Runakio Renee (37) and Bhaskar Yadram (25) leading their side’s effort.
Shamari Springer then stroked an unbeaten 45 to help push Barbados up to 137 for five by the cut-off point of the innings.
Batting a second time, Guyana reached 81 for two thanks to Sherfane Rutherford (35 not out) and Runakio Renee (34 not out) who have put on an unbroken 23 for the third wicket.
Guyana lead by 68 runs overall.
At Warner Park, Trinidad and Tobago made 156 all out after they were sent in, with Keagan Simmons getting 39 and Brian Joseph, five for 38.
In reply, Brian Joseph missed out on a half-century with 48, as Windward Islands were bowled out for 123.
Sachin Balai took four for 34.
