BASSETERRE, St Kitts (CMC) – Tame batting efforts left defending champions Jamaica struggling to avoid defeat on the opening day of the West Indies Cricket Board Under-15 Championship here Wednesday. Playing against Barbados at Warner Park, Jamaica were limited to 94 for nine in their first innings with Evan Jones top-scoring with 30.
Hasani Newton (3-3) and Shakeel Turney (3-9) took three wickets apiece while Deswin Currency claimed two for 22.
Barbados then tallied 176 for five with Daniel Chesham stroking 63 and Lenico Boucher getting 53.
Trailing by 82 on first innings, Jamaica stumbled to 87 for six in their second innings after being undermined by Shakeel Turney’s four for 22.
Michael Frew top-scored with 44.
At Molineux, Trinidad and Tobago were scenting victory after taking control of their encounter against Leeward Islands.
Opener Keagan Simmons struck 62 to fire T&T up to 144 for eight, despite Useph Hodge’s five-wicket haul.
T&T then restricted the Leewards to 90 for eight thanks to Bryan Boodram’s spell of five for 16.
In their second turn at the crease, T&T cruised to 62 for two, an overall lead of 116 runs.
At Conaree, Guyana were closing in on outright win against Windward Islands, after securing an overall lead of 183 runs.
Batting first, Guyana got 76 from Keemo Paul as they reached 171 for nine, before restricting the Windwards to 68 for nine.
Ewert Samuels led Windwards’ attack with four for 14 while Travis Persaud finished with three for 11.
In their second turn at the crease, Guyana reached 80 for five with Sherfane Rutherford top-scoring with 41.
