WITH reference to the recent controversial editorial in the Chronicle newspaper, which, according to Chairman Mr. Keith Burrowes will elicit disciplinary action, I wish to make a few comments. When I read the piece, I was shocked.
But I place freedom of expression in a sacred mould. I believe that we should voice our opinions against the editorial but we should not implement punitive measures since, all in all, it was a controversial view expressed.
Perhaps, we can compliment those who produced the piece to be brave enough to say what they feel openly. This is the quality of greatness. However, those who disagree should speak up against the editorial. This is also a characteristic of greatness.
Or are we to walk so carefully that our controversial opinions are never known?
I recall when Ronald Waddell called for genocidal implementation in Guyana, only three spoke out against it: Stabroek News, Frederick Kissoon and Krishna Nand Prasad. Others it appears were afraid to do so. Fear must not govern freedom of expression and freedom of expression must not be curtailed, I think.
