Walking on Sunshine for Isika staging today
— International guests to grace event
GLAMOROUS is back after a two-year hiatus, and Isika, at Parika, West Bank Demerara (a left turn before Parika Stelling) is the venue for this year’s spectacular return.
Themed “Walking on Sunshine”, the event is being staged today at 6.30 pm (18:30 hrs). Guyana Model Search and Designers Portfolio (GMSDP) began in 2008 as a spinoff of the Guyana Fashion Weekend (GFW) 2007. It was a natural segue of what was to become an increasingly popular and widely appealing feature on the annual calendar of national events. On the heels of the first Fashion weekend, the first GMSDP finals proved to be very successful, and patrons left the Pegasus seeing “GLAMOROUS” as the preferred showcase of Guyana’s emerging designing talent.
That year, the winners — models Shanelly Kendall, Michael Younge and designer Andrew Harris — went on to become proactive, enterprising individuals with a penchant for excellence. The following year, models Yolanda Kerr, Jamain Victor and designer Ronella Wosely shot to prominence with an international appeal to their look. Models Alana Phoenix, Steven Baggot and designer Natasha John proved that versatility makes for a powerful end product.
Glamorous 2008-2010 were great climaxes to the television reality show run.
A statement from the GMSDP said that, in today’s competitive world, the creative arts have become instrumental in forwarding sustainable development initiatives that are essential to fuelling Caribbean economies.Noting that through event-making these creative energies have been mobilised to ensure empowerment of the youth, creation of job opportunities, and harnessing and effective utilisation of diverse talents, the statement went on to say that fashion engages many of these said talents, and has served realistically to validate a reliance on the growth of a creative industry for regional development.
This year’s event will feature international guests Steven Cutting and Anna Maria Horsford.
