– to boost quality health care delivery
HEAD of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr Roger Luncheon at a post-Cabinet media briefing on Wednesday informed media operatives of Cabinet’s approval of the recommendation from Minister of Health, Dr. Bheri Ramsaran to pursue the recruit of medical specialist services overseas.

The Cabinet Secretary explained that these specialist services include the field of Internal Medicine and Obstetrics and Gynaecology (OB/GYN).
The current administration has over the years invested significant sums whilst going to lengths to ensure that quality health care services are on par with international standards.
The health sector for 2011 alone had numerous successes which includes the opening of a new in-patient wing at its main hospital, the formalizing of the pact with the Indian government for a 250 – bed specialty hospital, increased training of professionals, the dispatch of overseas trained doctors, introduction of new vaccines and significant investments in the upgrade of the numerous health facilities across the country with new services being offered.
This bid to further recruit specialists in the fields of internal medicine and OB/GYN will bring more successes under the belt of the current administration, as they continue to strive for the delivery of quality health care services being accessed by all.
With the many new health institutions built in the recent past, there is need for specialist services, and toward this end, the Government has ensured that Guyanese youths are undergoing training in medicine in Cuba and other countries.
Training initiatives are being made available locally every year and youths are taking advantage in the areas of pharmacy assistant, environmental health assistant, medical laboratory and x-ray technicians, nursing assistants, pharmacy assistants and environmental health assistants.
Additionally, three Guyanese doctors are training in ophthalmology in Guatemala and Paraguay.
