Reprimanded defendant granted bail on another charge

ORIN Birkett (no address given) appeared in court yesterday, charged with threatening behaviour and malicious damage to property. He pleaded not guilty to the assault charge, before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton, denying that, on June 23, he made use of threatening behaviour to Yonette Birkett.
But he pleaded guilty to having, the same day, maliciously damaged a teacup and a plate, valued $600, belonging to the same woman, although he claimed he only broke the teacup.
Police Corporal Simone Payne, prosecuting, said the defendant is the brother-in-law of the virtual complainant, who had gone out of her home and returned to find the wares broken.
The prosecutor said, based on what the virtual complainant’s son told her, she made a report and the defendant was arrested and charged.
The magistrate enquired, from the prosecutor, if there was a statement in the file by the virtual complainant’s son and was told no.
Birkett was then reprimanded and the damage to property charge was dismissed but he was granted $10,000 bail on the threatening behaviour charge and has to make another appearance on July 6.
