DELHOY Matthew, 18, of Lot 84 Caneville Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday, charged with larceny from the person. He pleaded not guilty to the offence, particulars of which said, on June 11, at Agricola Public Road, Greater Georgetown, he stole a shoulder bag, containing items valued $331,500, from Melissa Quintyn.
Police Sergeant Philip Sheriff, prosecuting, said the defendant was sitting in a minibus behind the virtual complainant and he asked the driver to stop.
However, as he was about to disembark the vehicle, Matthew snatched the woman’s bag and escaped but investigations led to him being arrested, the prosecutor said.
The magistrate ordered that the file with statements be produced when the case is called again, on June 29.
Until then, the defendant must post $250,000 bail.
