Hollingsworth’s “83 Million Gees” for Cultural Centre staging on June 23 & 24

RENOWNED playwright and director, Ronald Hollingsworth presents a brand new satirical play, titled 83 Million Gees at the National Cultural Centre on June 23 and 24. 83 Million Gees is a play that takes a look at the socio, political and economic struggles of Guyanese, and is based upon a multicultural group of Guyanese who are frustrated with their economic status and decide to steal 83 million dollars from a treasury.
This action, however, becomes a vicious struggle, as they each demand unreasonable portions of the money.
83 Million Gees is an award-winning play that was written in 1997, but Mr Hollingsworth feels that the play is even more relevant today than it was in 1997.
He stresses that this is a good play for Guyanese, although some portions will be challenging to us. He believes that, for the most part, the audience will walk away feeling justified that if they change they can positively contribute to the development of Guyana.
The cast consists of Mr. Mahadeo Shivraj, who left New York specifically to be a part of this play. He plays the lead role, with strong support coming from Lloyda Nicholas, Derek Gomes and Michael Ignatius. Shameeza Husein plays the role of the 75- year-old penny pincher who is a strong defender of her son’s ill-gotten gain.
Featuring also would be Mark Kazim and Chris Gopaul.
Hollingsworth has teamed up with Mrs. Sheron Cadogan-Taylor to do this production, as he is based overseas and she has been holding the reins in his absence.
Tickets for 83 Million Gees are on sale at the National Cultural Centre, Giftland Office Max, and Splasmins. Tickets cost $1,500, $1,200 and $1,000 respectively.
