THE Chairperson of the Women’s Affairs and Social Security Sub-Committee of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC), Mrs. Vilma Da Silva has made a proposal to establish a home for battered women and children in Region 2 (Pomeroon/Supenaam). Speaking at the RDC statutory meeting on Tuesday, she said the hospice is urgently needed to help women and children facing domestic problems and are abused or homeless.
Da Silva also challenged other councillors and religious leaders to help counsel women victims of violence and abuse in the region.
She said her sub-committee will also address issues where domestic violence is reported and prompt actions are not taken by the police.
Da Silva, a farmer of Lower Pomeroon River, is, as well, a director of the New Guyana Marketing Corporation and a founding Member of the Pomeroon Women Small Cottage Industries.
She represents Pomeroon in the RDC.
