Police investigating Venezuelan fuel boat mishap

DEPUTY Commissioner of Police (Law Enforcement) Mr. Seelall Persaud yesterday revealed that police have since begun investigating the Sunday trawler explosion at Morawhanna, Region One (Barima-Waini) in which four Venezuelans were injured. He noted that the men were off-loading a consignment of fuel from that neighbouring country at the time of the incident. The engine room caught fire suddenly, and the men all sustained burns about their bodies. They were initially transported to the Mabaruma Hospital for medical care, before later being air dashed to the city, where they were admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC) for treatment. As at press time, their conditions were listed as critical.
The Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) is said to be investigating this incident, since MARAD is the agency which determines the seaworthiness of all vessels and reports on such incidents. However, when contacted yesterday, MARAD officials were unavailable to comment.
