Two charged with possession of drugs smoking utensils

TWO men, charged with being in separate possession of utensils for smoking drugs, appeared before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo, in New Amsterdam Court, on Tuesday. One of them, Willet Hooper, 48, a carpenter of Lot 131 Bermine Housing Scheme, was granted $75,000 bail, over the objection by Police Inspector Jairam Ramlakhan, prosecuting.
The prosecutor had objected to the grant, stating that the defendant has another case pending and had failed to attend court.
In his narrative, the prosecutor said, on April 27  last, the defendant was a pedestrian at Republic Road and Philadelphia Street, where ranks observed him acting suspiciously, carried out a search on his person and found an improvised glass pipe.
Hooper has to be back in court on June 15.
The other defendant, Llewellyn Singh, 51, of Lot 3 Patrick Dam, Mount Sinai, was allowed $50,000 bail after he too, pleaded not guilty.
He was arrested on St. John Street, in New Amsterdam, as well, where police were carrying out routine checks on suspect.
His next court date is June 8.
