Teenage robbery convict granted bail pending appeal
KEINO Thompson, who was convicted and sentenced to three years imprisonment for robbery with violence, has been granted $75,000 bail pending his appeal.
The 17-year-old prisoner succeeded with the grant yesterday, from Justice James Bovell-Drakes, who heard a petition by his mother, Doris Sharper. Among other things, the woman said her son was involved in a scuffle with the virtual complainant but did not rob him.
Police prosecuting the case, in the lower court, had presented witnesses, including the victim, Richard Bhola.
The latter testified that he was walking along the road in Vryheid Village, West Coast Berbice, when Thompson, in company with others on bicycles, cuffed him several times about his body and robbed him of a cell phone and a ‘Casio’ wristwatch, valued a total of $28,000.
Bhola said the attack took place under a street light in the area, the glare from which allowed him to be able to recognise Thompson and he held on to him.
The affidavit in support of the petition was presented, in the Berbice High Court, by attorney-at-law Mr. Rabindranauth Singh after being drafted by other attorney-at-law Mr. Mursulene Bacchus.
