Judge, jury, police visit Kaneville murder scene
JUSTICE Roxanne George and a 12-member jury hearing the Kaneville murder trial motored to the scene of the crime at 445 Grove on the East Bank of Demerara yesterday.
There Latifan disclosed that she and her husband, Barbot Paul, were sitting that Sunday night on August 6, 2006, when they decided to pack up greens that were on the shelf in front of the shop. According to her, as they were about to do so, her husband was in front and she behind, when she saw a man with a gun aiming it at her husband.
Seconds later, her husband was shot. He fell on his knees and was attempting to reach for his gun when the gunman shot him a second time.
She ran into the shop and hid under a dog pen, when the gunman entered the building and started shooting.Latifan said that her son and grandson also had to hide from the bullets that night. Her granddaughter Nazeema Peersaud, who was hiding in her bedroom, heard male voices commanding her to come out of the room, which she did.
When she came out, she noticed men with guns in their hands, including the accused, whom she said she had seen on previous occasions. The men then commanded her to take her to where her grandfather stored his other gun. She took them to her grandfather’s other home at Lot 312, where the men tried to get the gun, but without success. The men, Latifan said, escaped with money, jewellery and a cellphone.
Defence counsel, George Thomas enquired from witness Latifan how, while lying on her back underneath a dog pen, she was able to recognize that the gunman in the yard was the same gunman who was firing from the gate. The witness admitted that she had seen his legs and the gun which he had at his side.
Further hearing continues today.
