Norton Street fire…

House saved from destruction as arsonist torches car
A MAJOR disaster was averted, early yesterday morning, when a building was saved from destruction in Norton Street, Georgetown.

An incendiary device, which had been placed on the premises, destroyed a motor car, PNN 7144, that was parked under the house.
Owner of the vehicle, Odessa Wells, of Lot 12 Norton Street, Wortmanville, told the Guyana Chronicle that, about 02:50hrs, the alarm on it went off and, when she got out of bed and looked through her bedroom window, she saw her silver gray ‘Avensis’ on fire and a man fleeing the scene.
She said she raised an alarm and put her daughter over a fence in the safety of her neighbour’s yard before throwing a bucket of water to douse the flames.
She said other residents summoned the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) and two tenders from Central and West Ruimveldt stations responded and contained the blaze to the car.

But the walls of the dwelling house were scorched in the process of saving the building from complete destruction.
Wells added that she also observed that the man who set her car alight escaped in another that was waiting for him a few houses away, also on Norton Street.
Asked if she had problems with anyone who might be a suspect, Wells said, last Monday she had a spat with another woman but she is unsure of the motive for torching the vehicle she acquired only nine months ago.
The entire interior of the car was destroyed, leaving only the shell and it is believed that whatever set it afire caused the destruction within a few minutes, she said.
Wells said the Police are investigating the incident and she was expected to give them a statement.
