JICA makes another donation to GPHC’s paediatric ward

–relations essentially built around economic cooperation projects
THROUGH strengthened partnerships between the Guyana and Japan Governments, the Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA) continues to render various forms of assistance to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
Yesterday, the JICA made a donation of eating and drinking utensils, a microwave oven, children’s clothing and books, besides bath tubs and chairs for children, among other items to the Paediatric Ward of the GPHC.
The hospital praised the company for its contributions, and announced that it would always be open to accepting this kind of assistance from the Japanese company.
Relations between Guyana and Japan have been built essentially around economic cooperation projects, and in the English-speaking Caribbean, Guyana has been one of the main recipients of Japanese assistance through such programmes as general grant aid, small-scale grant aid, training programmes under the JICA, and the use of Japanese expertise in many other areas.
This year’s volunteer to GPHC is a nurse with 30 years experience, a post-graduate research specialist, and an experienced paediatric nurse educator.
Retired Staff Nurse and Administrator Ms Sumiko Yoshida is the second JICA nurse to have come to Guyana to work with the hospital with the sole aim of improving the paediatric nursing system in Guyana.
Training has been scheduled for June 5 to July 27, 2012 under the banner: ‘Introduction to pediatric nursing’. Nurses in training will benefit from a 32-hour lecture session and demonstration in paediatrics.
Speaking with the media, Chief Executive Officer of the GPHC, Mr. Michael Khan, has said that the collaboration between Guyana and Japan has brought much improvement in several areas to the GPHC.
Questioned about the language barrier, Khan said this has never been an issue, since these persons are able to interpret and use the English language.
