THE Government of Guyana, through the Ministry of Health, has conducted several free eye clinics across the Essequibo Coast and on Wakenaam island over the past four days. Coordinator of the exercise, Mr. Nankishore Persaud,said at least 300 persons had their eyes examined by doctors from the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH).
He said the examinations were done at Wakenaam, Suddie and Charity hospitals, Anna Regina Health Centre and at the Regional Administrative Office, up to yesterday.
Persaud said, at Wakenaam, 39 persons were seen, five diagnosed with cataracts and one with Ptery disease.
Another 50 persons were seen at Suddie Public Hospital, 10 suffering from cataracts and three with Ptery while, at the Anna Regina Health Centre, of the 87 seen, 13 suffered cataracts and five with Ptery.
At Charity Hospital, 176 patients were attended, 18 were diagnosed with cataracts, 21 with Ptery and seven suspected to be suffering from glaucoma.
Persaud said the outreach will continue today at the Supenaam Amerindian Hostel and persons diagnosed with eye diseases will have to visit the GPH for further tests.
Several patients who had their eyes examined said they are thankful to the government and Minister of Health, Dr. Bheri Ramsaran, for the clinics in Region 2 (Pomeroon/Supenaam).
Persaud said the next such outreach will be held in Region 1 (Barima/Waini).
