Toddler patient with second degree burns responding favourably

THE three-year-old girl admitted to Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) on Monday, suffering second degree burns, is responding favourably to treatment in the Paediatric Ward. The child, Makayla Haynes, of Annandale North, East Coast Demerara, was burnt when she, reportedly, fell forward into a fire set by a neighbour who was burning rubbish in an open place opposite her home.
She was, at the time, looking at the blaze, according to her mother, Amanda Haynes.
The toddler suffered severe burns to the legs, arms and abdomen and was rushed to the Accident and Emergency Unit of GPH, accompanied by her grandmother, in a Guyana Defence Force (GDF) ambulance, which responded to the emergency call.
The mishap occurred at a time when the Guyana Burn & Healthcare Charitable Foundation of Canada is hosting a team of Canadian doctors.
On Tuesday, the visitors teamed up to hold yet another training programme for nurses education at the GPH.
