THE theme this year was “Love Out of This World” , as the Supa Stylistics Mother and Daughter Pageant, which is now one of the most anticipated aspects of Mother’s Day activities, got under way last Saturday Night at the National Cultural Centre. As is customary, the pageant featured three pairs of queens in the junior, middle and senior categories.
Against a backdrop of living, breathing Barbie and Ken dolls, striking a pose in their clear plastic front boxes, the little delegates and their moms modelled to Fergie’s ‘Glamorous’ as they attended “Barbie’s party”.
Junior category winners, Holly Fraser and daughter Aleka, chose blushing, pink-toned dresses. Aleka’s puffed sleeved dress featured a white band around the waist. Mom wore a pink cocktail dress with white trim, white wedges, and faux pearl necklace and drop earrings.
First runners-up were Nadine Saunders and daughter Mya. Nadine and Mya chose a multicoloured look with matching dresses of pink, green, purple and white. Five- year-old Mya wore a green bolero over her dress and a matching green purse. Moms wore green pumps and a green purse with her outfit. Both wore glamorous updos with their outfits.
Second runners-up Diana Nazier and daughter Leeandra chose sunflower yellow with purple accents. Leeandra had puff sleeves with purple ruffles peeking from underneath. Mom wore a short, ruffled dress with purple pumps.
Four other contestants also competed in this category. Mom Zina Edwards and Romeaka wore lilac and baby pink. Romeaka won over the crowd as she strutted her stuff, wearing a party dress with ruffles. Mom Zena wore a pink, one-shouldered cocktail dress with a sequined waist and matching pumps.
‘The Elegance of Nature’s Fertility’ was the grandly named Olympia Small-Soneram piece, modelled by mom Marisha Bowen and daughter Sasha. The versatile pieces, which appeared to be off – white, featured lime green satin touches. Mom wore hers with wedges decorated with a green bow. While Sasha complemented her outfit with green beads on her braided hair.
Well matched pair, Daune Whinefield and Treasure, were decked out in shades of pink. Treasure wore her hair in rolled curls with an off-the-shoulder party dress that featured a rose at the side. Mom wore six diagonal stripes across the front that represented the age of her daughter, also with a rose at the side. She accessorised with silver high- heeled slippers with pink roses on them.
In an unusual colour combination, Alicia Davis and Zoe wore peach and pink. Zoe was only too happy to show off her dress, which had spandex bodice and a ruffled pink organza bottom, while Mom wore a fitted cocktail dress with a gold band.
For the middle category, the theme shifted to a celebrity theme, with moms lounging under umbrellas waiting for their daughters, while paparazzi lingered nearby.
With the music of Will I AM and Nicki Minaj “Check it out” in the background, middle category winners Natasha James and daughter, Nkasi, wore pieces called ‘Blossom’, featuring the colours orange, brown and white. Natasha wore an asymmetrical-front dress, while Nkasi wore a cascading waist with a detachable scarf and a reversible bag which changed from tie dye to orange.
Under the theme ‘Fun with Fantasy’, first runners-up Melissa Parris and daughter Christol wore pink and plaid, with Christol’s plaid overlay being removed to turn into a bag and mom, not to be outdone, making a picnic blanket. The pair were left dressed in matching tube tops and Capri pants.
Second runners-up, Tandika Samsodine and Chrisell, wore outfits representing joy and happiness. The similar looks featured fitted bodice with ruffled bottoms. Both wore white hats complemented with a splash of sunflowers and matching yellow shoes.
Two other pairs competed in this category, Pamela Atwell and daughter Deandra, who wore almost identical tea party pieces. Both wore wide brimmed hats accented by roses.
Onicka Andrews and daughter Shamia wore ‘Hibiscus Bliss’, pieces that were accentuated with larger than life painted hibiscuses. Both dresses featured contrasting colour bands around the side. Mom’s dress was similar, but featured a one shoulder. They both wore complementing hats and footwear.
In the senior segment, delegates were required to dress as if going to a very special occasion. Winners Donette La Rose and daughter Shonette, who both have svelte frames, confused the audience for a while as they looked like sisters. The elegant pieces, titled “Forever Green” were made from elegant bridal satin with green lace. Both gowns had fitted waists but mom’s had a slit down the front, while daughter’s featured a tiered look.
First runners-up Dorothy Bradshaw and daughter Lisa were dressed for an Old Year’s Night at the Pegasus. They both wore fitted purple gowns with black, ruffled bottoms.
Second runners-up, Annette Bess and Alicia wore orange and black pieces, titled “Majestic Sunset”. Alicia wore a slightly spicier version of her mom’s dress. Both gowns featured fitted bodices flowing into a ruffled black skirt. The gowns were complemented with black glittering flowers, long black gloves and diamante necklaces.
Reigning Miss Guyana Universe, Kara Lord, and mom Gillian, were regal in royal purple as they attended “A dinner hosted by Barack Obama at the White House”. Gillian wore an elegant, high-waisted gown made for a full-figured woman, with lace bodice accentuated with faux diamonds. Kara’s form-fitting piece was also superbly decorated with rocks and crystals. Both pieces were designed by Derek Moore.
Veronica Murray and daughter Ongel wore taffeta and chiffon, green body fitting gowns which featured an elegant Roman touch of a yellow sash. The pieces were designed by Olympia Small.
Attending Prince William’s engagement, Janice Williams and daughter Ayanna wore silver and gold pieces.
Esther Persaud and daughter Angelica were dressed for a dance at the Princess Hotel wearing red dresses. Anglica’s gown featured a fitted bodice with spaghetti straps and sheer front, while mom’s gown featured a v-neck and was complemented by silver shoes and a diamante necklace.
John Shepherd of Circle of Love and Jivencky of GT&T Cellink Jingle competition serenaded the ladies with a cover of Michael Jackson’s “The Girl is Mine”.
The pageant was judged according to the criteria of appropriateness, originality, finish, fit, accessories and display of outfit
