WORKERS of the Georgetown Mayor and City Council (M&CC) are often left unable to uplift salaries after they would have worked for an entire month, and the dire financial situation at the Council seems not to be getting any better. City Treasurer Andrew Meredith, whom City Councillors have accused of rampant corruption and of swindling monies under his jurisdiction, reported to a statutory meeting of the Council, early in April, that salaries could not be paid on time for April month-end, because the Council was focused on paying outstanding amounts owed to the National Insurance Scheme (NIS), and to the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) for Pay As You Earn (PAYE).
The Mayor and City Council of Georgetown (M&CC) will be meeting stakeholders next Wednesday to find ways to rescue the city from its present problems.
This meeting will be held at the Pegasus Hotel here in the city at 10:00 hrs, and is part of several activities planned to mark the 200th anniversary of the name-change of the capital city from Stabroek to Georgetown.
The Solid Waste Management Department of City Hall will be finalising plans for massive clean-up exercises in all wards of the city.
Those exercises hope to see residents contributing to a clean environment by disposing of their waste appropriately.
Mr. Mayor how much more will you ask residents of Georgetown to endure?
They already pay high rates and taxes to you to do the job for them and you have failed to deliver.
They should come out on the streets in full force and demand you show them what you did with their monies.
Most residents in Georgetown have at least one garbage bin in their yards always ready to be picked up on time.
At the rate you are going you will want to ask residents to place about 29 garbage bins in their yards when you refuse to pick up their garbage they already paid for.
With regard to construction garbage, it’s your duty to know who are the people who pile up their garbage in all areas of Georgetown.
You see Mr. Mayor, there are some including yourself who are running City Hall who on most occasions turned your blind eyes to those who pay to pile.
Most Georgetowners are talking how City Hall people are like one big family who take the people’s monies as though they are throwing box hand.
The ‘fat cats’ in City Hall divvy up most of the money between themselves and to hell with what anyone thinks.
Speaking of ‘fat cats’, I would like to see Mr. Ramjattan try raising his voice and a hand at cutting the ‘fat cats’ wages at City Hall.
Let Mr. Ramjattan raise his voice to the people of Georgetown, and tell them the truth about the PPP/C Government repeatedly bailing out City Hall.
Let Mr. Ramjattan try his hand at cutting a little bit, just a little bit off City Hall budget and demand no more government bail outs.
You bet your life Mr. Ramjattan would be awakened to the realities of political life trying something like this in Georgetown; so Mr.Ramjattan will remain silent and let the PPP/C Government deal with City Hall’s stench.
This PPP/C Government must never make the mistake in doing what union bosses want and that is to install an interim management council.
It’s a trap, since unions will be one day for government and next day against government.
Let there be an election to have those at City Hall removed or either be put back by the people since it’s up to the people to decide if they still want the same bunch of incompetent individuals.
