Ex-cop-turned-taxi driver’s death a well-orchestrated execution
–police pursuing leads, but no arrests yet
FROM ALL indications, substantiated by available evidence, the execution-style murder of 25-year-old ex-cop-turned-taxi driver, Renie Williams of King Edward Street, Albouystown, Georgetown, was a well orchestrated hit, investigators revealed yesterday. Police said they have some new leads, although they are yet to make an arrest; but they are still investigating.
A lone gunman had managed to waylay Williams as he returned home in the wee hours of April 30, 2012. As he was about to exit motorcar HB 9310, he was shot and killed in front of his home and in the presence of his wife, Shondeen Walters.
Yesterday, she told the Guyana Chronicle that she had tried to retrieve the car, which has been lodged at the Brickdam Police Station, but was unsuccessful, since investigations are still ongoing.
She noted that the owner of the taxi would like to retrieve the vehicle, but was told that she cannot uplift the car just yet.
Walters noted that she and her husband had been in Linden for the Town Week celebrations, and had returned to the city on Sunday night, but had decided to go to the seawall before going home.
At about 02:00hrs on April 30, as they drove up to their home and were about to exit the vehicle, two shots were fired to the driver’s side of the car, hitting Williams in the chest.
“I realised my husband was shot, after he slumped in the car after what sounded like explosions; and when I looked up, I saw what appeared to be am image running away, since the place was dark and void of light,” Walters said.
She disclosed that a lone masked gunman clad in dark attire came up to the rear of the car and shot through the back glass on the right hand side. The bullets hit Williams in the back, one exiting the chest on the right side, while the other became lodged in his left side chest.
The grieving woman stated that she then informed her relatives, and conveyed the mortally wounded Williams to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), where he was pronounced dead.
She added that Williams left the Guyana Police Force (GPF) three years ago, and they have also been married for almost three years.
Relatives are of the opinion that the taxi driver had been executed. He had been attached to the Satellite Taxi Service, and was the father of two children from previous relationships. He is survived by two siblings and scores of relatives.
Police, in a press release, said that at about 01:30hrs on Monday, April 30, 2012, taxi driver Renie Clive Williams, 25, of King Edward Street, Albouystown, was sitting in his motor car, HB 9310, in front of his residence when a man approached and discharged several rounds at him, hitting him to his back.
