HUNDREDS of Essequibians, who attended a series of People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) public meetings on Essequibo Coast recently, have advocated snap elections.
Those calling for a return to the polls said it is to stop the Opposition political parties in their march to sabotage development under the present Government. The call was repeated during the past five days to put an end to the Opposition domination of Parliament with their one-seat majority.
People turned out in numbers to listen to Minister within the Ministry of Agriculture, Mr. Alli Baksh and said they are fed up and disgusted with the Opposition, who, heartlessly, cut the National Budget by some $21 billion.
According to people in the ‘Cinderella County’, the cutting of the estimates is stopping development and bringing hardship on the people of Guyana and said snap elections would help development in the country to move forward.
“We want our hydropower station to be completed. What is wrong with Ramjattan and Granger and the rest of the Opposition members…Are these people blind. How can these people who claim to be representatives of the people of this country vote to stop progress?” one housewife asked.
The exhortation was the same at Riverstown, Lima Sands, McNabb, Affiance and Lima on the Coast and Jacklow in Upper Pomeroon River.
Minister Baksh, who spoke about the country’s agricultural development and the importance of non-traditional crops, explained, in detail, the reduction of the National Budget and how it will hamper development and cause suffering to Guyanese.
Other Member of Parliament (MP), Mr. Cornel Damon, speaking at a Lima farmers meeting on Friday, also attacked the Opposition parties for cutting the National Budget and endorsed the demand for snap elections.
Damon agreed that the Opposition parties are trying to stop development but said Guyanese have recognised their tricks and snap elections will solve the problem.
