AWARD winning photographer Mike Charles has just completed another expedition in the compilation of his new DVD showcasing Guyana. This DVD will be an addition to the ‘Guyana Yours To Discover’ DVD series which will be launched later this year. Mike’s one week expedition was aimed at documenting the Greater Flamingoes (American Flamingoes) that resides inland in the saline swamps along Guyana’s north Atlantic coastline. The area is located thirty five (35) miles north of the mouth of the Pomeroon River in Region 1 (Barima/Waini). The area is called ‘Iron Punt’ because of an Iron Punt that sunk in that area many years ago due to the extreme roughness of the Atlantic Ocean in that zone. The extremely rough water extends along our Atlantic coastline for about fifteen (15) miles in the area of ‘Iron Punt’ and outwards to the ocean for a few miles. This is the only known area in Guyana where the Greater Flamingoes, seen above, can be found.
