Giddings’ 98 pilots Courtland All Stars through to quarter-finals

… No.70 also advance
A BRILLIANT 98 from Oliver Giddings spearheaded Courtland All Stars to a convincing victory in their last-16 playoff against Canefield, thus earning them a place in the quarter-finals of the 2011 Berbice Cricket Board/New Building Society Second Division 40-Over cricket competition.
In the match which was played at Edinburgh and which was reduced to 35 overs-a-side due to a late start, Courtland All Stars won the toss, batted and were given a start of 43 from Giddings and former Berbice Under-15 batsman, Dwayne Crandon.
After Crandon left, Giddings continued, involving himself in a partnership of 60 for the third wicket with Troy Mathieson (23) and 40 for the fourth wicket with Travis Williams (15) before he fell at 175 for 4 in the 30th over for his 98 which included 6 fours and 7 sixes.
With former Berbice cricketer, Eon Gibson, hitting 23 not out, Courtland All Stars managed to reach 224 for 8 in their 35 overs, against the bowling of off-spinner Romash Munna who took 3 for 26 and medium pacer Khamesh Kassim 2 for 34.
When Canefield began their run chase, even though they lost 2 early wickets, they were still in the chase, moving along to 55 for 2 in just 4.3 overs, before declining to 77 for 6 and later being bowled out for 128 all out in 25.4 overs.
Khemraj Sumair top-scored with 23 and Vishal Mohabir 20, while Keon Sinclair (3 for 28) and Mathieson and Trellon Cort, who took 2 for 12 and 2 for 13 respectively, destroyed their hopes of recording an upset victory.
Meanwhile in another playoff at No.64, No.71 defeated No.64 Fighting Marines by 82 runs to also move on to the quarter-finals.
Winning the toss and batting first, No.71 made 147 all out in 24.3 overs with Fiaz Mohamed top-scoring with 46 and Nazim Mohamed 29. Bowling for No.64 Fighting Marines, Jason Itwaru took 3 for 33, Davendra Budhoo 3 for 18 and Sean Persaud 2 for 34.
No.64 Fighting Marines replied with a mere 65 all out in 16.4 overs with Faqueer Mohamed 20 being the lone batsman to reach double figures. as Shiraz Khan (4 for 11) from 5 overs, Deoprakash Ramdat (2 for 16) and Deomangal Deodharie (2 for 26) destroyed their batting lineup.
