David  strikes twice to hand LTI  2-1 over  Multi
STRIKER  Colwyn David piloted the Linden Technical Institute (LTI) to a 2-0 win over Christianburg/ Wismar Secondary ‘Multi’ with a fantastic double as the curtains came down on the Edward ‘Screw’ Richmond 4th annual Memorial Linden schools’ under 20 football championship which was played at the Mackenzie sports Club ground  last Thursday night.
David was the tournament’s top scorer again as he amassed what must have been a record sixteen goals, in the process finishing off any hopes the ‘Multi’ boys had  of winning, as they were relegated to the ‘bridesmaid’ position for the fourth straight year of this prestigious championship.
David, as he had done last year when he spearheaded the Harmony Secondary to the title, was the top forward in the championship and he again was in tandem with his captain Trenton Lashley, as they had done for Harmony last year, to  assure the LTI of their first championship on debut.
The final was graced with the presence of president of the Edward ‘Screw’ Richmond Foundation, which is based in the United States, Ernest Joseph, key members Joseph London out of New York and James ‘Gads’ Dennis who resides in Canada and old stalwarts like Jimmy Mclean and Bing Charter among others.
The final was played after the Mackenzie High School had scored a narrow 1-0 win over Linden Foundation Secondary in the third place playoff game.
It was a fitting tribute to the man, in whose honour the tournament is played Edward ‘Screw’ Richmond , who was a truly gifted sportsman and became the first football player out of the Mining Town to represent the senior national team.
The game was played on a heavy outfield but the game was one of significance and the players made the best of the conditions.
In the 23rd minute an opportunity came for the LTI and David was there to ensure his side took the lead. He took the spot kick just outside the 18 yard box after teammate DeShawn Hazel was fouled down and the shot was blocked involuntarily by the defence.
But the alert David pounced on the ball as it ricochet out and with a one time left foot shot, he blasted the ball past the dazed ‘Multi’ goal keeper Damal English.
In the 32nd minute ‘Multi ‘ could not convert on a chance and eight minutes later LTI were presented with an opportunity which came their way but with only the goalkeeper to beat, the ball was sent high and  far.
In the 43rd minute the LTI were again given a chance which they made good of with Clarence Higgins, relaying the ball to David moving inside left, and he only had to beat one player.
Then, as another defender was about to challenge, David unleashed another thunderous drive that went past the outstretched flailing hands of the ‘Multi’ goalkeeper as his reaction was too late and the LTI took a 2-0 lead to end the first period of play.
The second period did not bring real relief for the fourth time finalists Christianburg/ Wismar Secondary ‘Multi’ but they were only able to reduce the advantage five minutes to the final whistle when their most impressive forward Kwesi Quintin registered a snap shot to score, beating Keon Boston in goal, as the game eventually ended 2-1 for the eventual winners LTI, fending off a late run by the ‘Multi’ side.

In the end the LTI walked away with the top awards, save for the Final’s MVP taken by Quintyn as David was adjudged the tournament’s top striker for his 16 goals in the championship, with Best mid-fielder being teammate and captain Trenton Lashley, Best Defender Andrew Breedy and Best Goalkeeper Keon Boston also from the winning team, the Best Coach prize was also copped by Dwalon Farrel of Harmony Secondary and among the sponsors were Guyana Youth Development Association out of the United States, Edward Richmond Foundation, Comfort Zone Taxi Service, James ‘Gads’ Dennis of Canada, Compton London of the United States among others.
