OLPF protesters get support from Regional Chairman
STAFF members of the One Laptop Per Family (OLPF) Essequibo Office staged a protest at Anna Regina Car Park yesterday morning, against the proposed budget cut by Alliance for Chance (AFC) and A Partnership for National Unity (APNU). The protesters were armed with placards that read ‘Budget cuts means poverty’, ‘Guyana will not develop under AFC/APNU’, ‘AFC/APNU want to stop development in Guyana’ and ‘AFC/APNU sell out workers’.
They marched around the car park area and shouted that AFC and APNU are stopping the OLPF programme to deny poor people their free computers.
One demonstrator said Mr. Khemraj Ramjattan and Mr. David Granger do not have love for Guyanese and are working against development.
Another person in the crowd declared that the future of Ramjattan and Granger as Presidents in the making is over.
“We Essequibians don’t want to see them anymore. They are hopeless and cannot lead this country. Instead of the cut, they should have asked for more for poor Guyanese.
“Why destroy the progress of Guyana? Are the Opposition really interested in development?” he asked.
A senior staff member of OLPF on Essequibo Coast, Ms, Wattie said Essequibians want the programme to continue because many poor persons are looking forward to their laptops.
Heartless
She said Ramjattan and Granger are heartless, cold and mean.
Another staff member, Darshine Lall said the proposed budget cut is not fair to young people and wondered where is Guyana going, forward or backward.
Chairman of Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam), Mr. Parmanand Persaud, in support of the young protesters, called for all workers, including those from trade unions, to join forces against the Opposition to stop them in their drive to undermine development.
He said the Region is against the subsidy cut for GPL and declared that the move by the Opposition is foolish.
Persaud said, if he was in the Opposition, he would have called for more increases so the people can benefit but the Opposition is so stupid they are now losing support because the people will suffer in the end.
