$50M Tipperary Hall at Buxton awaiting commissioning

– Lumumba
PRESIDENTIAL Advisor on Empowerment, Mr. Odinga Lumumba announced, yesterday, that Tipperary Hall, at Buxton, East Coast Demerara, is ready for commissioning.
But, he said, the date for the official ceremony has not yet been decided on, as word is being awaited from President Donald Ramotar.
The new $50M building is to provide recreational and sporting facilities for the community and even for persons outside of it, who may wish to use it for such purposes, Lumumba told the Guyana Chronicle via telephone.
He said, while there were a few challenges to complete the project, those responsible managed to overcome them and were successful.
Lumumba, himself a villager, said Buxtonians believe that the edifice will serve as a vehicle to unite them and engage the youths meaningfully.
The original Tipperary Hall was erected in 1909 on the same site but it had deteriorated so much, by 2010, that then President Bharrat Jagdeo, following meetings with villagers, to whom he had given an undertaking, initiated the erection of its replacement with Government funding.
The sod was turned on December 20, 2010 and the contract was executed by Victor Graham and Associate Services.
Tipperary Hall was a popular venue, dating back decades, for social, cultural, educational and political activities.
