THE President’s Youth Award: Republic of Guyana (PYARG), in collaboration with Food for the Poor (Guyana), conducted a workshop for residents of Mashabo Amerindian community, recently, with the aim of empowering and educating them. PYARG Field Assistant Officer in Region 2 (Pomeroon/Supenaam), Mr. Herald Alves attended the exercise which was held in the newly commissioned Faith Community Centre and residents participated fully in the day’s activities.
Addressing them, Voluntary Services Overseas (VSO) volunteer, Ms. Erica Downes, speaking on healthy lifestyles, said it is important for them to get involved in sports and other things like walking, running and swimming, which will help to keep the body active and healthy.
Another speaker, Headmistress of Better Success Nursery School, Ms. Desiree Vanlewin said it is important for parents to teach their children good manners and to get them involved in educational events.
On child development and schooling, she said parents must have good relationships with the teachers of their children, so as to keep good track of their children’s development and progress at school.
Mr. Naipaul, of the Board of Industrial Training, in his presentation said villagers can get involved in the BIT programme.
According to Naipaul (only name given) the training is mainly focused on skills and is very easy for residents especially youths to get involved.
He said the aim of the programme is to help empower youths within the ages of 16 to 25 years and that the youths can be trained right in their community.
At the end of the workshop, residents expressed thanks to the PYARG and Food for the Poor for conducting it in their village.
