Rohan Singh offers a broad perspective on piracy

THE letters from Mr. Rohan Singh titled “A perspective on Piracy and Security” provides quite a broad perspective on the factors facing Guyana in addressing piracy. Like a lot of problems, an immediate, mid-term and long term solutions must be found. Fishermen need a way of protecting themselves through some specially armed and trained crew members, while working with other fishermen in a team effort to aid or report attacks. They must use methods to signal for assistance. Such assistance must be capable of responding as quickly as possible.

Also the police must adopt better investigative techniques to discover who and where these attacks are coming from. Is there some inside information used?  Who may be buying the stolen goods? Can the police set up a sting operation as a possible buyer? How well positioned is our response teams where there are most attacks?  More strategically placed small speed boats should not be beyond the financial capability of the government, while waiting for perceived need of larger Coast Guard vessels. Remember, the pirates’ boats are smaller than existing Coast Guard boats.
