IT is with a touch of frustration that I write to inform the Guyanese public about the treatment being meted out to ordinary, decent, hard working customers by a well known household store.
I have heard over the years of people being hoodwinked, harassed and hassled by this company, but took these stories with the proverbial pinch of salt, until I was in the hot seat.
For you to understand my problem, I need to explain the course of events that led to my frustration and outright rage.
Less than four months ago, I began the process of purchasing a lap top from the said store on hire purchase, and after submitting my down payment, I had a change of heart, not because I did not want the item.
It so happens that after examining the purchase agreement I decided it was cheaper to pay cash rather then sell my soul to afford the interest payments (twice the selling price) on that computer.
In exercising my freedom of choice, I ventured to the store in question, explained my decision after which I was refunded my initial down payment and went home; a week later I bought a computer cash, from another store.
I was happy with my decision and relished in the fact that no creditors would be hounding me if I missed a payment, and soon erased the event from my memory, until the creditors came a’ knocking.
After a considerable amount of time had passed, I received a letter from the company informing me of my “account” being in arrears; this was followed by irate calls to my home and finally a visit by the repossession agents.
Initially I thought it was just a mistake, but even after informing management of what actually happened, I was continually hounded to pay for this item which I did not take. To top it off, I was informed that the computer records showed that the item was delivered to my home.
Several questions went unanswered by the management of that entity, who signed for the computer, where was that document to show this, and most importantly where was the computer in question?
To date no one can provide these answers, and I’m not at all appeased by being assured that the situation is being handled, because the company’s records reflects that I owe them monies on an item that I collected. If it comes to it I will have to seek legal advice.
The matter has not yet been settled but two things are apparent to me , it seems that customers these days do not have the prerogative to change their minds and the company in question, for all of their claims at being well established, do not have the ability to keep proper records, else a $250,000 item would not have vanished.
