THE Machinery Corporation of Guyana Limited (MACORP) and the University of Guyana (UG) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in an effort to further advance the development of students within the Faculty of Technology and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Guyana. The signing of this MOU was followed by a presentation ceremony held in MACORP’s Conference Room at Providence, East Bank Demerara, attended by CEO of MACORP, Jorge Medina; Product Support Manager, Guillermo Escarraga; Vice-Chancellor of the University of Guyana, Ms. Marlene Cox; Dean and Assistant Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of UG, Ms. Verlyn Klass and Mr. Audwin Rutherford respectively.
The event took its course with welcoming and opening remarks from Supervisor of the Human Resources Department of MACORP, Ms Althea Blair-Woodroffe, followed by the comments from the MACORP CEO, who stated that he was proud to be signing the memo. He added that the activity coincided with the MACORP vision, added value to the stakeholders, and he was committed to doing what was necessary for the sustainable development of the UG students.
Medina said MACORP intends to upkeep and create more opportunities for students, as proper education is key to a good future for this country.
For that main reason, he explained, MACORP was offering training programmes for students who had graduated from the technical institute or the university. A number of students have already been using the company’s laboratory and general machinery for further studies.
Mr. Medina stated that Guyana could not expect growth and development if the young minds of Guyanese engineers were not assisted and organized with the proper tools and equipment. He also mentioned the filtering system of his company, which he explained was simply to choose the best of the young engineers who were capable of meeting the actual needs of the system.
He further explained that one could not be hesitant to assist, and students must fuel the system to have precise work done, as nothing good is ever free. He stated that he was fully aware of the needs of the students of that faculty, and that his company was prepared to help build a better Guyana.
His comments were followed by those of Ms. Marlene Cox, who stated that she was thankful for the contribution from MACORP, as it was of great benefit to the Faculty of Technology, playing an important part in addressing that faculty’s infrastructural needs. And she thanked MACORP for being with the university ‘through thick and thin’.
Ms Cox’s comments were followed by the signing of the MOU, presentation of items, and vote of thanks, which was done by Ms. klass and Ms. Woodroffe.
Ms. Klass especially thanked MACORP for providing opportunity for valuable experience for her faculty, and for facilitating placement of students within the staff of the company.
