–in critical condition at GPHC
EIGHTEEN-year-old Amerindian gold miner George Savoury of Matthew’s Ridge, North West District was air-dashed to the city and admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC) in a critical condition on Friday, after two men had severely chopped him about his body when they also robbed him of a substantial but undisclosed amount of cash at Eyelash, a gold mining community located about half an hour’s drive from Matthew’s Ridge, the administrative centre of the Region One sub-region.
Savoury sustained chops to the left side of his neck, his left leg and right arm, both of which were almost severed, left hanging only by a piece of flesh.
The injured man arrived at the Accident and Emergency Unit of the GPHC at approximately 17:30 hrs, and was met by his sister, Margaret, and a female cousin who had earlier received word of his tragedy.
As they waited at the A&E Unit, the distraught young women brainstormed how they should break the news to Savoury’s mother, who had also been a patient at the Female Medical Ward but had, only minutes earlier, been granted discharge and was preparing to leave the hospital.
The injured lad related that he was on his way out to Matthew’s Ridge to conclude travel arrangements out of the mining community to see his sick mother and/or send her money on the ill-fated Thursday night when he was attacked. He was at a shop at Eyelash and, at around 23:00 hrs, went outside in search of a urinal when he was rudely confronted by two men armed with cutlasses, who demanded that he turn over all that he had to them.
The young man said he was afraid, but told them that he had no money, to which, responding in anger and disbelief, they whisked out cutlasses and began chopping him wildly, causing him to fall to the ground. In the process, he sustained gaping wounds to the left side of his neck, which registered mere centimetres away from his windpipe. The bones in both his left leg and right arm were also severed. The men then did a body search on him, found the cash he had, and made off with it.
Even as he lay on the ground, Savoury said, he did not know that his foot had been almost severed, until he attempted to get up and fell back to the ground. He was also bleeding profusely.
Shortly after the men had left, he was rescued by passersby and taken to the Matthew’s Ridge Hospital.
Police are currently probing this incident.
