DIGICEL threw their support behind the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) as they branded the National Men’s Sevens team ahead of the HSBC Hong Kong Sevens Series scheduled for March 23 – 25 in Hong Kong.
Yesterday in a simple press briefing at the Digicel building, Barrack and Fort Streets the company’s Public Relations Officer (PRO) Shonnet Moore said that they were pleased to support the team in getting them to Hong Kong.
This is Digicel’s maiden voyage with the GRFU and even though they did not disclose the amount put forth to support the team, they did say that it was a substantial contribution.
The players will be sporting blazers, jersey and ties with the GRFU and Digicel logos.
Also present at the ceremony were Chairman of Selectors Mike McCormack, first vice-president Robin Roberts, head coach Theodore Henry and captain Ryan Gonsalves, who all expressed their appreciation to Digicel and the other private sector and government agencies who supported them.
The players are in high spirits and they have high expectations since they have been training hard. The team’s goal is to qualify as a core team which would mean an automatic invitation to tournament’s annual edition.
According to Henry, the team is 90% of where they need to be and the training to be undergone with the USA Sevens team, which is a core team one week prior to the tournament, is supposed to prepare them even better.
He said if Guyana can compete with the USA team in terms of speed and other factors, they are sure to do well against the teams in their group.
