After accidents…

Cabinet sees need for more regulated maritime sector
– HPS
HEAD of the Presidential Secretariat (HPS), Dr. Roger Luncheon said, yesterday, that Cabinet discussion, last Tuesday, reflected the need for a more tightly regulated maritime sector that should emphasise personal safety and that of its assets.
Speaking at his weekly post-Cabinet media briefing, at Office of the President, Shiv Chanderpaul Drive, Georgetown, he referred to maritime accidents, observing how the death toll and losses have been mounting as shipping incidents occurred with some degree of frequency.
He said: “Cabinet noted that many lives, of young people, were being lost.”
Luncheon said, at the Cabinet meeting, the consensus was that maritime safety has to be more aggressively pursued in terms of the regulation, inspection and enforcement, particularly at ports, wharves and at the private stellings that abound on the coast of Guyana.
He said it was also discussed that the welfare of seafarers and fisherfolk has to be better attended.
According to him, this calls for some enhanced level of urbanisation among these fisherfolk and seafarers, to enhance their engagements and successful pursuits with employers, owners and operators.
Furthermore, Luncheon said, a capacity to respond to early warnings with communication devices and systems and signals that would be installed and could be made mandatory was also discussed.
