… Fruta Conquerors demolish Camptown for third place
DESFORD Williams was the star of the final when he led the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) to the 2012 NaMilCo Football Festival title over Beacon United as the tournament came to a close with an entertaining double-header at the Tucville Playfield on Sunday night.
In the goal-filled night the army team claimed a commanding victory over Beacon United 4-0 in the final to cart off with the $1M top prize while the runners-up had to settle for $500 000.
Contesting the third place were the hosts Fruta Conquerors and Sunburst Camptown in a battle regularly dubbed ‘the clash of juices’.
Conquerors put forth a terrific display of football to comfortably demolish the opponents 7-0 and claim the $200 000 third prize while Camptown took home the $100 000 fourth prize.
Williams’ hat-trick performance earned him the Highest Goalscorer Award which will be shared with Fruta Conquerors’ Jahall Greaves who also scored a hat-trick on Sunday. Both these players ended the tournament with four goals each.
The final saw the inexperienced Beacon United line-up falling prey to the GDF team in every aspect of the game. GDF drew first blood as early as the ninth minute when Williams recorded his first goal then his second goal in the 28th minute which meant Beacon were down by two going into the second half.
It was much of the same in the second half with GDF playing with comfort and firmly in control of the battle. Williams completed his hat-trick in the 57th minute then his teammate Stephen Dolphin pitched in with a 68th minute goal to put the victory further beyond doubt.
The appetiser for the final was the Camptown/Conquerors clash which saw the latter lead 3-0 at halftime as Greaves (15th, 25th) and Dwayne Laurence (17th) accounted for the first-half goals.
In the second half Laurence completed his brace six minutes in while Greaves went on to convert his brace into a hat-trick in the 67th minute.
Their teammates Fernando O’liveira and Colin Edwards decided to take a piece of the spirit-shattered opposition with goals in the 68th and 70th minutes, respectively.
The HGS award was provided by Junior’s Jewellery; GDF’s Delon Young was the Best Goalkeeper; GDF’s Delwyn Fraser was adjudged the Most Valuable Player and two young promising players are yet to be chosen for the two Global Technology Scholarships.
Executives of the Fruta Conquerors would like to express their gratitude to the co-sponsors Bayridge Taxi Service, 2J’s General Store, Oasis Water Company, Star Party Rentals, Banks DIH Ltd, and Guyana Beverages Inc.
