WHILE there seems to be turmoil with the Caribbean Cricket Administration, the Jamaican Cricket Team is certainly dominating the 2012 Caribbean Four-Day tournament.
President of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Julian Hunte plans to visit Kingston immediately to apologise to Jamaican Prime Minister Portia Simpson-Miller for inappropriate remarks made last week by the WICB Secretariat. It is extremely important for Mr Hunte to visit the Honourable Prime Minister and respectfully apologise to her and the Honourable Prime Minister, must also demand that Christopher Gayle be selected to play for the West Indies Cricket team.
Earnest Hilaire and Ottis Gibson are not the lords or the czars of Caribbean Cricket and they must recognise the Caribbean people. The Jamaican Prime Minister was perfectly correct to request an explanation on why no Test match was allocated to her country.
Further, the open war between Gayle and the cruel and rude Hilaire and Gibson must come to an end. The end must not justify the means! Chris Gayle must be allowed to play for the West Indies.
The West Indies team must include our best players in the Caribbean and those power-drunk and arrogant officials must “cool out”.
The Honourable Jamaican Prime Minister weighed in on the controversial non-inclusion of Gayle, a former West Indies captain of the team since early 2011. She also questioned the non-inclusion of Jamaica as a venue for the upcoming Australia tour of the Caribbean.
It is not by chance that the West Indies Cricket Administrators cannot find sponsor for West Indies cricket. The business community cannot tolerate the attitude of the three musketeers. Mr. Hunte, Hilaire, Darren Sammy along with Gibson are all bad for the present and future of West Indies Cricket.
Insularity is at its highest and Ernest Hilaire is the one who seems to be all-powerful.
A careful scrutiny of the spectators at the various venues where we are playing cricket reveals much. The television crew seems to seek pride in showing the vast empty seats at cricket matches.
It is an established fact that cricket is being played in some territories that can barely muster a handful of spectators. Guyana is one of the very few countries where our stadium usually attracts a massive crowd. Yet Ernest Hilaire is instrumental in allocating very few matches to Guyana.
The delinquent administrators in the West Indies cricket were fully aware of the problems in the Guyana Cricket Board, but they (WICB) neglected their responsibility, as the regional authority, to resolve the problems.
Hence, today we are facing crippling problems with our own Guyana Cricket Board. It must be noted that several territorial cricket Boards are experiencing severe problems.
The entire WICB is fully aware that one cricket board is operating from a computer out of an individual’s home and further, another cricket board has not held an annual election for several years.
Today, Guyana Cricket Administrators are in chaos. Many of the better executive members are resigning from the Guyana Cricket Board. It is imperative that the Interim Management Committee (IMC) speed up its work so that a proper Executive can be put in place to administer Cricket in Guyana.
Guyana is a founder member and a reputable stakeholder of the WICB. The WICB committed an unpardonable sin by moving a scheduled Test match from Guyana against Australia to Dominica.
The Guyana National Stadium and the Guyanese mammoth support of West Indies cricket make Guyana a creditable venue for any West Indies cricket match. The rabble currently parading as WICB Administrators have denied the Guyanese people their ‘right’ to see our cricketers in action and seek to make it a Hilaire privilege.
Guyanese want to see Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Ramnaresh Sarwan and Devendra Bishoo in action against Australia, while Guyanese will be denied the live experience of the batting of world-rated batsman Darren Bravo and the superb fast bowlers that are currently in the West Indies team.
This insular, vindictive and ‘damn’ removal of all matches – that is first class and Test matches – from Guyana must not be tolerated. Guyanese in one voice with the Caribbean people must support our colleagues in Jamaica and demand an apology to our dear Caribbean leader Portia Simpson-Miller and further, we must demand that Gayle be included in the West Indies team.
Our President, His Excellency Donald Ramotar, must raise the unacceptably rude attitude of the WICB towards our country at the next CARICOM Heads of Government Meeting in Paramaribo.
CARICOM Heads must discuss the rapid decline of West Indies cricket and the disrespect and arrogance of the WICB Secretariat.
The few musketeers that are at present administering West Indies cricket are making plans to return Julian Hunte at the helm of West Indies cricket for a further three years and Hunte and his clique must not be allowed to be in office for a further three years.
The WICB desperately needs more courteous and sensible leadership.
