GPL assures consumers of crews deployed for emergencies
GUYANA Power & Light (GPL) explained, yesterday, that periods of high winds, coupled with heavy and persistent rain on Wednesday, led to an increase in the number of network faults. In a release, GPL cautioned that those weather conditions will continue over the next few days, resulting in compromised structures and sodden conditions, and asked consumers to contact its emergency call centre on telephone numbers 226-4015/2264016 to report any situation requiring attention.
The release said additional emergency crews have been deployed to handle the elevated level of emergencies and priority attention is being given to all drainage pumps, as is usual in such circumstances.
GPL said the adverse weather conditions on Wednesday, February 29, caused a number of network faults and a 60 hertz (hz) shutdown.
At 03:20 hrs, a fault at Industry, East Coast Demerara, caused GPL’s frequency converter to trip and, shortly after, a 60 hz shutdown occurred but all circuits were restored by 04:28 hrs.
The release said the fault at Industry was found and corrected at 07:52 hrs and electricity was restored to consumers between Success and Coldingen, East Coast Demerara, at 08:03 hrs.
GPL said, at 14:35 hrs, a large tree fell on two circuits serving consumers between Bel Air, Georgetown and Coldingen, East Coast Demerara.
However, despite driving rain and high winds, GPL crews were able to locate the tree, remove it from the network and complete necessary repairs, restoring current to consumers at 17:00hrs.
