SPECIAL prosecutor Mr. Vic Puran, who is prosecuting the treason case against Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Major Bruce Munroe, his wife Carol Ann Munroe and former Army Reserve Officer Leonard Wharton, yesterday announced that he is closing the case. After almost two years since the commencement of the preliminary inquiry before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, the lawyer informed the court that he is closing the preliminary inquiry.
During the hearing since the trio was first charged, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Mrs. Shalimar Ali-Hack was prosecuting the case. Only recently Mr. Puran took over the case when he was appointed special prosecutor by the DPP.
The witnesses in the case were Quincy Critchlow, who was the chief witness, Colonel Sydney James, and Detective Sergeant Trevor Reid.
The witnesses were each crossed examined by defence counsel who is representing all three accused.
On March 15, submissions will be laid over to the court.
The Munroes and Wharton are accused of having, between December 1, 2009, and December 16, 2010, plotted to level war within Guyana and force the President out of office.
The charge for the capital offence is linked to the arson at the Ministry of Health in Brickdam, attempts to burn Richard Ishmael Secondary School and the Supreme Court and the gun attack at Brickdam Police Station, all within Georgetown, in July 2009.
