-as part of Mash celebrations
A GROUP of 150 students from Canje Secondary School, in East Berbice, Region Six, visited the Guyana National Newspapers Ltd, printers and publishers of the Guyana Chronicle, in Georgetown Thursday as part of an itinerary planned by the school in observance of Guyana’s 42nd anniversary as a Republic.
The group, presumably the largest ever to be taken on tour of the company’s facility at the same time, was accompanied by eight teachers, headed by Deputy Headmaster (Ag), Mr. Philip Adams.
The students were divided into two sub-groups, namely the Business group, comprising 23 Fifth Formers, and the English Group, which accounted for 127 students ranging from Third through Fifth Forms.
While at the GNNL, they were taken on conducted tours where they witnessed the operations of the press; Editorial Department; Layout; Circulation; Camera Room, and Marketing departments, among other places.
The majority of those students had never previously visited a newspaper establishment, and they were intrigued and very interested in what was being explained to them. Some even indicated a desire to work within such an organization in the future.
The group visited other entities on their one-day tour: The Bank of Guyana (Business Students), The Ogle Airport, The Museum, the Lighthouse, and Splashmin’s Aquatic Fun Park at Madewini, East Bank Demerara.
Deputy Headmaster Mr. Adams expressed gratitude to the staff of the GNNL for having the group visit, and was optimistic that the tour would help the children with their respective subject areas in preparation for their School Based Assessment (SBAs).  That apart, he said it offered them exposure to different environments outside the precincts of the school, and that they had great fun as they travelled around the city, viewing different places and meeting friendly faces.
After a hectic day on Wednesday, travelling out of  East Canje from 05:30 hrs and touring throughout the day, the group was expected to leave Georgetown at around 16:45 hours, headed  back to their hometown, where they are expected to have even more fun as they join in observing Mashramani Day 2012.
