While the PNC might be fuming because of the resignation by stalwart, Dr. Faith Harding, from the party’s executive, the entire nation supports her sincerity in wanting to play a more supportive role in the furtherance of women’s affairs in Guyana.
The people salute this distinguished daughter for taking such a bold decision for parting with the PNC executive and expressing her desire to work closely with President Donald Ramotar.
Her decision to put partisan politics aside to further her interest for the involvement of women in this country’s affairs must be seen as one of principle, and one that could certainly leave the door open for others, both men and women, to rise above partisan politics and join in genuine efforts to improve the lot of all Guyanese.
Dr. Faith Harding is not just an ordinary member of the PNC. Indeed, she was a member of the party’s executive, and refuses to be sidelined by members of the party to which she gave the best days of her life, so far.
It is to be noted that the PNC to which Dr. Harding belongs, forms the largest bloc in the opposition grouping, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU).
It is also recognised that following the last national and regional elections in which APNU obtained 26 seats against 32 for the ruling People’s Progressive Party/Civic which captured the largest amount of votes cast, strange as it may seem, several of the PNC stalwarts including party leader Robert Corbin, Aubrey Norton and even Dr. Faith Harding herself among others were inexplicably excluded from APNU’s list of parliamentarians for the 10th Parliament.
Dr. Harding must be lauded for the courageous steps she took in breaking loose from the cocoon in which she was entrapped for so long, to once again lead a productive life in which she could help thousands of women throughout this country. She stated her intentions clearly when in an interview with this newspaper, she said: “I want to end the divisiveness that I see, politically, in this country. I want us all to get along and know that it is the people to whom we are reaching out to develop our nation and make those resources work for them and their children.”
Dr Faith Harding is a lady of class and character, who refuses to be cowed by her actions, and those who talk about putting country first should take a cue from her.
She has exhibited her desire to work along with President Ramotar in areas where she could be an asset in the development of our women and country as a whole. Her eagerness and willingness to work along with President Ramotar in the interest of the people of this country show that she is selfless, and this should be an example to the opposition leaders who pay lip service to putting country first.
A classic example was the parliamentary sitting on Thursday, when the opposition used their one-seat advantage in the House to unleash their reckless and irresponsible behaviour to stymie the work of the government.
Their behaviour in the House on that day is a clear indication that come what may, they are not prepared to go along with anything put forward by the government. It is also a case of honouring tripartite and other discussions on matters of national concerns in the breach. This is indeed a gross departure from the trust cemented among parties, and gives one the expressed intention of the opposition to oppose just because they want to make the government ungovernable.
This type of attitude could only lead to further widening of the gap between the government and the opposition, which is not the best situation in a hung parliament.
Although Dr. Harding’s decision should be an example of unqualified cooperation, it seems as if the opposition parties in the national assembly have a well planned agenda to make the government ungovernable.
Faith Harding is the peach among the apples
