Freddie lacks political maturity and fairness

A GOOD media practitioner  is expected to be balanced in his/her presentation of  the  particular issue in focus, and this must be irrespective of what personal viewpoint may be representative. And since the public relies on the media  for information and views, then it is even more important that objectivity be the  cornerstone of the operative’s piece, lest the readership become victims of gross misrepresentations and distortions.
The above principles ought to be well known to Freddie Kissoon, premier columnist of that great sensationalist, Kaieteur News, and recently dismissed political science lecturer at the University of Guyana.
But he does not practise such tenets.  Instead, he holds great grudges, descends into tantrums and libellous attacks, especially when one does not agree with his particular beef.  To note  also, is the fact that  he opposes, merely because of different shades of opinion. One will agree that even though politics is adversarial in nature, one must still give the opposite side  credit when due. It is a sign of political maturity and fairness, qualities which  he obviously  lacks.
From the onset, there were some curious  persons who opposed government’s decision after a court ruling, to establish an Interim Management Committee(IMC) to administer the  affairs of local cricket; and, as was expected, Freddie Kissoon was  one of them. No surprise, at all.
He has continued in this same vein with a reference to this matter of national importance, by accusing the government of  rejecting  the CARICOM-brokered deal that stipulated the working together of both the IMC and the Guyana Cricket Board(GCB); and, as usual, he has accused the present government of “ authoritarianism  in these post-Jagdeo times. What a statement!
I am quite sure that Kissoon had been aware of the sordid goings on, emanating from that now distasteful GCB, particularly  an incident in which one of its officials had been almost disfigured by the use of a noxious substance. Was there ever an enquiry from him as to such?  Not one that can be recalled.  And as one who posits himself  as the repository of all that is fair, has he ever publicly stated his disapproval to the un-cricket activities of those GCB officials, that have resulted in Guyana’s cricket performance being greatly diminished?
Freddie must be reminded that  it is the  government’s right  to  accept or reject   any such agreement, as it sees fit. Such a deal meant that the very persons whose offices were defined via a court ruling would still be a part of the local game’s  administration, which would be unfair to the challenge brought against them. Moreover, such a deal would not be in the best interests of cleaning up the  venalities  at the BOARD.  The government has the inalienable right to proceed in the manner as it has  on this issue of national importance.
This columnist has once again demonstrated his penchant for being convenient.   As a Guyanese, like all of us, he must be aware  that cricket is  perhaps the premier sport  in the nation, and that its administration  has been taken to the depths of disgrace by self-serving individuals.  If he so  describes himself as objective, then, he must accept that the steps taken by the government   are in the best interests of restoring  the sport’s  management to its proper level of national integrity. But, since he hates the PPP/C government, such  an emotion has blinded his objectivity, thereby  eroding his sense of good judgement.
Such is Freddie Kissoon.
